FAQs
Who is eligible for KY HealthCorps membership?
If you meet the eligibility requirements below, we’d love to get you started in the enrollment process to become a KY HealthCorps member.
Minimum qualifications are:
Be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service
Have a high school diploma OR be a high school student working towards their high school diploma
Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
Consent to State and Federal background checks
What are the training requirements?
You will have general and role-specific training before you enter the host-site facility. General training includes AmeriCorps policies, how to submit timesheets, public health training, and a pre-service orientation. Role-specific training will depend on the position you select. Some positions require CNA certification training, and others will require business management training.
How does the living allowance work?
You will receive a living allowance for your service that varies depending on the number of service hours you’ve committed to. The total amount of your living allowance is spread evenly throughout your term of service and you are paid twice a month. In order to receive your living allowance for a pay period (two weeks), you must serve a minimum of 16 hours.
What is a term of service?
Your term of service is the time period between your start date and your end date. This is determined before you begin service. You must complete all of your service hours within your term of service.
Am I guaranteed to be assigned the same facility as my friends?
You are assigned a facility based on the location of your school or home, so it is likely that you will land at the same facility with members who live near you or go to school with you.
Can my service in KY HealthCorps count toward my practicum/internship requirements?
Yes! We are working with a number of universities and colleges throughout the state to ensure your service meets the requirements of an internship or practicum. Just make sure to let us know about that in your application.
Can I serve more than one program year?
Yes! A Member may serve up to four AmeriCorps State and National terms of service; however, the Member may only earn the equivalent of two full-time Education Awards. To be eligible to serve any additional terms of service, the Member must receive satisfactory performance reviews for any previous term of service.
Are insurance and other benefits provided?
No. All KY HealthCorps positions are part-time and do not include benefits.
How does the Education Award work?
Upon successful completion of the term of service, you will receive an education award that varies depending on the number of service hours you’ve committed to.
The Education Award can be used toward:
The cost of attending a Title IV institution of higher education
The balance on an existing federally insured student loan
The cost of attending a qualified vocational school
The cost of participating in an approved school-to-work program
